The Basic, Simply
A dispatcher finds loads for your truck and handles the work around them. That means searching load boards and broker contacts for freight on the lanes you want, negotiating the rate, sending over the paperwork, and dealing with the follow-up so you are not making phone calls from a truck stop, the same hands-off coordination behind our reliable managed logistics service. You still own the authority, the truck and the decision. Nothing gets booked without your say-so. The reason owner-operators use dispatchers is simple arithmetic: hours spent searching boards and haggling over rates are hours not spent driving, and a driver who is not moving is not earning.
Whose Side You Are On
This matters more than anything else on this page, so it is worth being direct about it. A broker works for the shipper and is paid to move freight at a competitive rate. A dispatcher works for the carrier and is paid to get that carrier the best rate available. Same load, opposite sides of the table. ENorth operates a freight brokerage as well, and any carrier considering dispatch services from a company that also brokers freight should ask how those two sit together, the same question we expect from any partner across our supply chain management work. The answer needs to be specific rather than reassuring, covering whether dispatched carriers are ever placed on our own brokered loads, how rates are set when they are, and who sees what. Ask us that question directly before you sign anything, and expect a straight answer in writing.

Backhaul Planning
The one on that list most owner-operators underrate is broker credit checks. Hauling a load for a broker who pays slowly, or does not pay at all, costs far more than a weak rate does, and by the time you find out the freight has already been delivered, which is exactly the kind of loss our freight insurance is built to cover. Checking credit before a load is accepted is quick, unglamorous and occasionally saves an entire month’s revenue.
Choosing Well
You should be able to turn down any load without penalty. If a dispatcher pushes loads you have refused, walk away.
Long lock-ins with penalty clauses are a warning sign. A dispatcher who performs does not need to trap you.
A flat percentage of the linehaul is standard. Ask specifically whether anything is added on top and whether fuel surcharge is included in the calculation.
Your dispatcher should be paid by you, not by taking a margin out of the rate before you see it. Ask to see the original rate confirmation.
A dispatcher who books with brokers who pay slowly is costing you more than they are earning you.
If the company also brokers freight, ask how dispatch and brokerage are kept separate and get the answer in writing.

Carrier Feedback
“I was spending two hours a night on load boards after already driving all day. Handing that over got me those hours back and I am running fuller weeks than I was managing on my own.”Ā

Carrier Questions
Finds loads for your truck, negotiates the rate, handles the paperwork and follows up on payment, so you spend your time driving rather than searching boards.
No, and the difference matters. A broker works for the shipper and arranges transport. A dispatcher works for you, the carrier, under your own operating authority.
Yes. A dispatcher works under your authority as your agent. You keep the authority, the insurance and the truck.
No. Every load is offered to you and you decide. Any dispatcher operating forced dispatch is one to avoid.
A percentage of the linehaul on loads booked, agreed before you start. Ask any dispatcher whether that percentage includes fuel surcharge and whether anything else is added.
No long-term lock-in. If the service is not working you should be able to leave with reasonable notice rather than a penalty.
Yes. Your preferred lanes, equipment and home time are set at the start and worked around, though rates and availability vary by lane and season.
Yes. Invoicing, payment follow-up and coordination with your factoring company can be included.
Yes. Broker credit is checked before a load is accepted, because a good rate from a broker who does not pay is worth nothing.
