Reverse Logistics - Getting Value Back From What Comes Back

Everything moving backwards through your supply chain. Returns, repairs, recalls and end-of-life stock, collected, inspected and routed to whichever outcome recovers the most value, coordinated as part of our broader supply chain management work.

The Basics, Simply

What Is Reverse Logistics?

Normal logistics moves products towards the customer. Reverse logistics moves them the other way, from the customer back to you. It covers more than returns. Repairs coming in for fixing, faulty stock going back to a supplier, products recalled for safety reasons, packaging collected for reuse, and equipment reaching the end of its life all travel backwards through the same distribution logistics chain. It is harder to manage than forward logistics for one reason. In forward logistics every item is heading to a known destination in a known condition. In reverse logistics each item arrives in an unknown condition and could need any one of several completely different outcomes, and someone has to decide which.

The Cost Of Waiting

Why Speed Decides How Much You Recover

A returned item is worth the most on the day it arrives and less every day after that. Clothing loses value as the season moves on. Electronics lose value as newer models launch. Anything seasonal loses value the moment its season ends. Meanwhile the item sits in a box taking up space, and the same product may be showing as out of stock on your website while it waits, including inventory sold through our Amazon FBA fulfillment network. This is why returns are processed to a fixed window rather than dealt with when somebody has time. Items are inspected and given their decision within a set number of hours of arriving, so sellable stock moves back through our courier logistics network and goes back on sale while it is still worth close to what you paid for it.

Return Types

What Comes Back To Us

Six different reasons stock travels backwards, each handled its own way.

Recalls deserve a word of their own, because they are not simply a busy returns week. A recall carries legal deadlines, regulatory reporting and a genuine safety risk, and it usually arrives with no warning. The hard part is finding affected stock quickly across every place it might sit, including your warehouse, goods in transit tracked through our transportation management systems services, and units already with retailers or customers, then keeping all of it separated so none re-enters your sellable stock by mistake. We handle collection, quarantine and unit-level records, which leaves your team free for the customer communication and regulatory reporting only you can do.

The Disposition Decision

Where Each Returned Item Goes

Restocked

The item is as good as new and goes straight back into your sellable stock. The fastest way to recover its full value.

Refurbished

Cleaning, repair or repackaging brings it back to sellable condition. Worth doing when the work costs clearly less than the item will sell for.

Returned To Supplier

Faulty or wrongly supplied stock goes back up the chain, with the paperwork to support a credit or replacement.

Liquidated

Sold in bulk to a secondary buyer. Recovers less than resale but clears stock quickly, which suits seasonal goods losing value fast.

Donated

Usable goods you cannot resell go to charity rather than to waste, with records kept for your reporting.

Recycled Or Disposed Of

The last resort for items with no remaining value, handled to the environmental standards that apply to that product.

What Clients Say

Clients On What They Recovered From Their Returns

“We were sending nearly everything to a liquidator because sorting it properly took time we did not have. Once items were graded on arrival, a large share turned out to be restockable. We had been selling perfectly good stock for a fraction of its value.”Ā

Operations Manager

Footwear Brand, Toronto

“The return reason reporting was the unexpected part. One product line was coming back at four times the rate of anything else, and it turned out our size guide was wrong. We fixed the listing and the returns on it dropped away.”Ā

Ecommerce Director

Apparel Retailer, Oakville
