Pick and pack is four steps that happen every time someone orders from you. The order arrives from your store. Someone collects the right items from the right shelves, which is the picking part, supported by the same warehousing and inventory management system that tracks every location. The items are checked against the order, usually by scanning each barcode. Then they are packed into a box that suits their size and weight, labelled and passed to a carrier. It sounds simple, and for one order it is. The difficulty appears at volume, when hundreds of orders need collecting from thousands of shelf positions without anyone grabbing the wrong size or the wrong colour.

Picking is collecting the right items for an order from the shelves. Packing is putting them safely into a box, labelling it and getting it ready for the carrier. Together they are the work between an order arriving and a parcel leaving.
Every item is scanned against the order before the box is sealed. If the barcode does not match what the order says, it will not pass.
